Tofinou
Os Tofinou são um povo da África Ocidental que vive principalmente no Benim , mas está presente, em pequeno número, no Togo e em Gana; existem algumas variantes do seu nome: Tofini, Tofinnu, Tofinus ou Tofinou.
Os Tofinou baseiam sua economia na pesca e são famosos por terem conseguido elaborar um plano inteligente para escapar dos ataques dos exércitos do Daomé em busca de escravos.
Os Tofinou viviam originalmente em Benin, dentro do país, às margens de um rio, e sempre foram pescadores habilidosos e, tradicionalmente, tiveram um bom relacionamento com a água e seus espíritos.
Os Tofinou exploraram o fato de que os Fon, a etnia do reino de Daomé, não tinham ligação com a água e, portanto, carregavam os espíritos da água, e também o fato de não saberem nadar; eles se moveram ao longo da costa e construíram uma aldeia sobre palafitas no centro do Lago Nokoué, acessível apenas pela água; dessa maneira engenhosa, eles conseguiram escapar dos ataques dos Fon, que estavam sempre em busca de novos prisioneiros para serem vendidos como escravos aos europeus.
Diz a lenda que a vila foi construída graças aos crocodilos que ajudaram os Tofinou a transportar o material até o centro do lago.
A aldeia de Ganviè, na região noroeste de Cotonou, é a principal área habitada da etnia Tofinou. É uma aldeia inclinada, feita de madeira de teca dura, muito resistente e com a característica de não girar, mesmo imersa em água; o telhado das casas é feito de um denso arbusto de palha.
A vida dos aldeões acontece nas pirogas, nas pirogas os homens pescam, as mulheres mostram os produtos para serem vendidos no mercado e as crianças brincam e vão à escola; não há estradas, apenas canais.
Os Tofinou, graças ao isolamento em que vivem desde a época do tráfico de escravos e do reinado de Daomé, praticamente mantiveram suas tradições.
Os Tofinou, também conhecidos como “homens da água”, ainda praticam a pesca como atividade principal; além de utilizarem redes que partem de barcos a remo e canoas, utilizam um sistema que consiste no porcionamento de algumas áreas, onde cada pescador cria uma espécie de “área de pesca” e utiliza varas e redes para capturar os peixes.
Os pescadores criam, então, um denso padrão de cercas e arbustos, uma espécie de labirinto dentro do qual os peixes ficam presos.
Esse método de pesca é possível devido à pouca profundidade do lago, que em alguns lugares ultrapassa um metro de profundidade. É também por isso que eles conseguem empurrar as pirogas usando apenas poleiros longos.
Os Tofinou, como a maioria da população do Benin, praticam vodu e cada lar é protegido por fetiches.
